This week's episode of Cooking Friday is Caterpillar Kabobs for the Letter C. Although we're not really cooking with a flame, my students look forward to this time of the week. Plus, it gives them a chance to try new foods when they normally wouldn't. Here's what we did:
- 10 green grapes
- 1 strawberry
- Dallop of Nutella
- 2 mini chocolate chips
- Bamboo skewer
Do these colors look familiar? They're inspired by The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. So first read the story aloud. Talk about the story's sequence of events.
Next, poke the strawberry into the skewer. This is the head of the caterpillar. Continue with the 10 grapes or the body of the caterpillar. Using the Nutella and toothpick, dab a little Nutella onto the strawberry and plop the mini chocolate chip. Repeat. These are the eyes of the caterpillar.
TA DA! It's the very hungry caterpillar!
Everytime I read this book, my students are completely entertained and engaged because of the content. This book touches many educational subjects like learning science (metamorphisis), nutrition (eating healthy), language arts, and math (days of the week and counting). And now, there's cooking into the mix. Yippee! Enjoy! Christine
